| Squad Profile | As Montgomery Township grew larger, it became clear that the township needed its own First Aid Squad. In 1972, the Montgomery Township First Aid Squad, now known as Montgomery Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) was formed. Initially with only 10 members, a membership campaign resulted in more than 20 recruits willing to serve within a short peroid. Hillsborough and Hopewell squads collaborated in training the fledging group to meet community emergencies, and the first crew was ready to roll by January 1973. Through the efforts of Art Seaman (Fire Company #1), we were given a 1961 Cadillac ambulance; a donation from the Roselle First Aid Squad. In 1977, the squad dedicated its headquaters which houses three ambulances and a meeting room which serves the community. Over the year, MEMS has built a reputation for providing advanced first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. When the State of New Jersey changed the regulations for training, we progressed our EMTS to the new standards of training. We also changed our name, to our present name, Montgomery Emergency Medical Services. Over the years we have also built a solid reputation with our police, both fire companies and our neighboring EMS providers. The township can be proud of the active cooperation among our emergency services. On June 11, 1992, a catastrophic fire started in the building. That fire destroyed one ambulance and heavily damaged the other two, as well as doing severe damage to the building. Ambulances were borrowed from Princeton and Hillsborough. The building repairs were completed over the next three months. In the Spring of 1993, almost full year later, two new replacement ambulances arrived and the third one, 47-1, returned from being repaired. During the period after the fire, not a single emergency call was missed. We are proud to be a part of an organization that has so much to offer the community. |
